KUALA LUMPUR, MON:

Persatuan Bolasepak Negeri (FA) officials who have been holding on to positions for too long without any significant contribution should vacate their posts and allow a flow of fresh blood into the system, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said today.

She said that since the decline of football in Malaysia was not the sole responsibility of the Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia (FAM), the state FAs should be equally blamed.

“The state FAs must look at themselves in the mirror because the Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia can set the policies but if not carried out or implemented by the states, then they are also to be blamed.

“Some state FA heads or officials have been holding on to their posts for too long without any significant contribution towards the development of football in the country and they should make way for new energetic young professionals,” Azalina told Bernama today.

Azalina was responding to Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s resignation yesterday.
Tengku Abdullah, who is the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, has been the Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia deputy president since 1994. He tendered his resignation yesterday, apparently taking responsibility for Malaysia’s lacklustre performance in the ongoing Asian Cup.

Malaysia, playing in and hosting Group C, lost their opening match 1-5 to China on July 10 and suffered another 0-5 defeat to Uzbekistan on Saturday.

Tengku Abdullah’s decision is expected to spark a number of resignations in the governing body for football in the country.

Meanwhile, Sports Commissioner Tan Sri Elyas Omar echoed a similar sentiment saying that developing football was not the sole responsibility of Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia but rather, a combined effort by everybody.

“In the past 20 years, our country has leap-frogged other countries in the Asean region as far as the development of infrastructure, economy, education and many other areas are concerned but on the other hand, these countries, who lag behind in these areas, seem to have overtaken our country in the development of football.

“If we can progress in the development of economy or other areas, I don’t see why we cannot develop football in the country. If may not be a difficult task but it needs a meticulous structure and effort from all the authorities,”

PERFECT GIFT!
29th August 2007 – The Malaysia Under-23 team scored a perfect gift for the country’s 50th anniversary of Merdeka this year when they beat Myanmar 3-1 in the final of the 39th Merdeka Tournament tonight at the Stadium Shah Alam.

In front of more than 40,000 fans, the national Under-23 side under head coach B. Sathianathan grabbed the title with goals from Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Razak in the 12th minute, an own goal from Aung Myo Thant in the 56th minute and then from Mohd Safee Sali in the 60th minute for the well-deserved victory.

Myanmar’s only goal of the evening came off Tun Tun Win in the 73rd minute.

“I am very pleased with the players,”said Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, the president of the FA of Malaysia (FAM) who was present at the match (pic) to present the USD 10,000 prize money to the winning team.

“Sathia will remain as the coach because the boys seem to like him where today, they went all out in the game and they truly deserved to win.

“For the upcoming FAM Congress, I hope that they will make sure that the right people will be put at the right place.”

With Malaysia’s last win of the Merdeka Tournament back in 1993, the Malaysian lads were full of vigour in the opening quarter as they pressed Myanmar into their own half.

In the 12th minute off a pass from Safee, strike mate Zaquan had only Myanmar keeper to beat before slotting home to give Malaysia the lead to rapturous delight.

The score at the break was 1-0 to Malaysia.

Myanmar did not have the best of start in the second half when in an attempt to make a clearance from an effort off Safee, they conceded an own goal in the 56th minute defender Aung Myo Thant turned the ball into his own net.

Malaysia then completed their win on the night four minutes later when off a pass from Amirulhadi Zainal, Safee blasted the ball home to put Malaysia in a comfortable position.

Tun Tun Win gave Myanmar a glimmer of hope when he scored in the 73rd minute from inside Malaysia’s penalty box but by then the game was already beyond contention.

As if to add insult to injury, Kyaw Khing Win was red carded two minutes to the end in a game which saw six yellow cards being flashed.

Despite the defeat tonight, Myanmar still walked away with the USD 5,000 prize money.

PERAK, who were denied the Super League title by Kedah, are determined to even the score when the two teams meet in the Malaysia Cup final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

Last won the Cup in 2000 beating Negri Sembilan in the final, themselves were beaten finalists the following year losing out to Terengganu.

But this year Perak have made it their mission to bring home the coveted trophy and after their impressive two-leg semi-final win over Sabah, they are looking confident.

But Darby is fully aware that Saturday’s opponents are chasing an unprecedented treble and that his Kedah counterpart Azraai Khor Abdullah will also be looking to make history by winning the Super League, FA Cup, and Malaysia Cup all in one season.

Darby was visibly pleased with Tuesday’s result and said: "It was fantastic and entertaining football by both teams, and the refereeing was excellent.
"Sabah are Super League material but it is surprising that they did not do well in the Premier League."

On Saturday’s big match, Darby added: "My players have to recover physically and mentally but they will be prepared."

And on the outcome, a guarded Darby said: "It is the two best teams in the country looking for victory."

Criticism

persatuan bolasepak malaysia critcism

FAM or Persatuan Bolasepak Malysia after years have been subject to criticism by many including the locals. Many fans or Malaysians are unhappy with the ever changing league format and the decline in the standard in the local league and national team. The fact that Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia introduces ad-hoc decisions has also mared its relationship with several state affliliates. There were stages when FAM allowed 4 imports, but within months changed its ruling to only allowing 3 to be eligible for every affliate, making teams loose out on compensation over termination of foreign players contratcs. A recent spat of FAM's unprofessionalism saw Sarawak Football Association (FAS) denied its 3-1 victory for the suspicion of fielding an ineligible player due to FAM's ruling which only came into effect after the player played put Sarawak FA back into rough waters with its parent body and although the player was mysteriously allowed to play after half of the season has ended, many fans are still unhappy that FAS remains the only association under the mycroscope of Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia.

Early 1920s

As with the rest of the world, the spread of the game of football is intertwined with the migration patterns of the British colony ideology.

It is believed that the game first took a foothold in the Malaysian Peninsular in the early 1800s establishing clubs where the number of foreigners were high in areas like Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

The game was played more as a form of recreation along with the game of cricket although the first Malaya Cup was played in 1921 between Selangor and Singapore.

Five years later in 1926, the first foundation stone for the Football Association of Malaya (FAM) was laid before it was officially founded as a national body in 1933.

The seriousness showed towards the game following the birth of the Malaya Cup competition elevated football to a higher level in the country with several other states forming associations.

The first president of the FAM or Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia in 1933 was Sir Andrew Caldecott to be followed by M. Shelley, Dr J. Webster, S. Scott, R. Williamson and Adrian Clark, who served up until 1940 - before Europe went on a full-scale war with Germany.

Singapore was the pre-war champion beating Kedah in the final 2-0.

The post war years brought tremendous pressure on the FAM, which had moved its office from Singapore to the Peninsular, to revive the game which had suffered tremendously in the intervening years.

But it did not take too long for the Malaya Cup to make a return with Negeri Sembilan celebrating the end of the war years with their first ever win of the Cup with a 2-1 victory over powerhouse Selangor.

The Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia first president after the war was J. King, to be followed by H. Bryson and then Dr C Rawson, who served for two years before vacating for the first ever non-British personality to take over the helm.
